The law

In Ireland, it's illegal for anyone who isn't a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) to carry out gas work in a home. That comes from the Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006, and the scheme is overseen by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU). It applies to natural gas and LPG.

What counts as gas work

More than people think. Installing, servicing or repairing a gas boiler is gas work. So is connecting a gas cooker, fitting a gas hob, or moving a gas pipe during a kitchen renovation.

The certificate you should get

For new gas installation work, an RGI has to give you a Declaration of Conformance. It confirms the work was done to the required standard. Keep it safe: you may need it for insurance or when you sell the house.

How to check an installer

Every RGI has a registration number. You can look it up on the register at rgi.ie. DDS Plumbing & Heating is registered under R0830.
