A simple rule of thumb

If the boiler is fairly young, it's broken down once and the fault is a single part, repair it. If it's old, it's let you down more than once in the last couple of winters, and the repair bill is climbing, a replacement is usually the better buy.

Questions worth asking

How old is the boiler? Older boilers are less efficient and parts can get harder to source.

How often has it broken down? One fault is bad luck. A fault every winter is a pattern.

What will the repair cost compared to a new boiler? Spending a large chunk of the price of a new boiler on an old one rarely pays off.

Are your heating bills going up? A new condensing boiler gets more heat out of the same oil or gas.

What it costs

Repairs are priced on the fault, and Dave will tell you the cost before doing anything. A new gas boiler is from €2,600 and a new oil boiler from €3,600. See the full price list or our guide to new boiler costs in Ireland.

Get both prices

The easiest way to decide is to see the numbers side by side. When Dave looks at a broken boiler, he'll give you the price of the repair and, if it makes sense, the price of a replacement, and leave the decision with you. Boiler repairs · boiler replacement.
